Install Data Recovery Pro on Windows

Download Data Recovery Pro Setup.exe, open it and click Install. Install it on your PC, never on the card you want to recover from.

Do not download or save anything to the card or drive you want to recover from. New files can overwrite the deleted ones.

The Windows version is in early access. It works the same way as on a Mac, but it has not been tested on many PCs yet. What's different on Windows.

  2. Open itDouble-click it in Downloads. The early-access setup file is not code-signed yet, so Windows may say “Windows protected your PC”. Click More info, then Run anyway. More about this warning.
  3. Click InstallThe Data Recovery Pro setup window opens. A desktop shortcut is added unless you switch it off on this screen.
  4. Click Yes when Windows asksWindows asks whether you want to allow Data Recovery Pro installer.exe to make changes to your device, with Publisher: Unknown. Click Yes. Setup needs this to install into Program Files.

Where it installs

For all users of the PC, in C:\Program Files\Data Recovery Pro\. The folder holds the app (data-recovery-pro.exe), the read-only card reader (drp-helper.exe) and the uninstaller (uninstall.exe).

Only an administrator can change files in Program Files. That stops other programs replacing the card reader that you give permission to on each scan.

What you need

  • Windows 10 (version 22H2) or Windows 11, 64-bit.
  • An Intel or AMD PC, or an ARM PC such as a Surface with a Snapdragon processor. On ARM, the app runs through Windows' built-in x64 emulation.
  • Microsoft Edge WebView2, which the app uses to show its window. It is built into Windows 11. If it is missing, setup downloads it, so stay connected to the internet while you install.
  • A way to connect the card: an SD slot or a USB card reader.
  • Permission to make changes to the PC. Windows asks when you install and once per scan. Why Windows asks on each scan.

Updating or reinstalling

Run a newer Data Recovery Pro Setup.exe. If the app is open, setup asks you to close it first. If Data Recovery Pro is already installed, setup offers Update or Reinstall. Your purchases and past recoveries are kept either way.

The app also offers new versions itself. See updating the app.

Not available yet

The app cannot scan the PC's own drive (Local Disk C:) in this version. There is no Linux version yet.
