File Explorer only shows the files a card still lists. To find deleted files, Data Recovery Pro has to read the card block by block. Windows allows that only with an administrator's permission, so when you click Start Scan it shows a User Account Control prompt.
What you see
- The question “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”
- The program:
drp-helper.exe, the small card reader that comes with Data Recovery Pro. - Publisher: Unknown. The early-access Windows version is not code-signed yet. More about that.
Click Yes. Windows uses the words “make changes” for any program that asks for administrator permission. Nothing is written to the card.
What happens when you click Yes
- The reader opens only the card you chose, and opens it read-only. It has no way to write to any drive.
- It passes what it reads to Data Recovery Pro on your PC. Nothing is sent online.
- The reader stops when you quit Data Recovery Pro.
Why it asks again for each scan
Each scan starts the reader again, so Windows asks again. That is the same as on a Mac, where macOS asks for your password once per scan.
If you don't have an administrator account
On a standard account, Windows asks for an administrator's name and password instead of showing a Yes button. Ask someone with an administrator account on the PC to type them in.
If you click No, the scan does not start and nothing is read. Click Start Scan to try again.
