“Windows protected your PC” when you open setup

The early-access Windows setup isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen warns about it. Click More info, then Run anyway.

When you open Data Recovery Pro Setup.exe, Windows may show a blue window headed “Windows protected your PC”. Under More info it says Publisher: Unknown publisher.

Why it appears

Windows shows this warning for programs that are not signed with a code-signing certificate. The early-access Windows setup is not code-signed yet, so Windows can't confirm who made it. The warning does not mean Windows found anything wrong with the file.

To carry on

  1. Check where the file came fromOnly run a setup file you downloaded from our download page. If you got it anywhere else, delete it and download it again.
  2. Click More infoThe link is under the message. The window then shows the file name and Publisher: Unknown publisher, and a Run anyway button appears.
  3. Click Run anywayThe setup window opens. Windows then asks whether to allow the installer to make changes. Click Yes. The install steps.

If there is no Run anyway button

Some PCs block unsigned programs completely, for example work or school PCs managed by an IT department. On those PCs you can't install the early-access version. Use another PC, or wait for the signed version.

Code signing

We are adding a code-signing certificate. Once setup is signed, Windows will show our name as the publisher instead of Unknown, and this warning will appear less often. Until then, the permission prompts during install and on each scan also show Publisher: Unknown.
