Why some files have no name after a format

Files found by the deep scan come back without their original names or folders, because those lived in the file table that was wiped.

A card keeps file names, folders and dates in its file table. The files themselves are stored separately. A format, or a damaged card, replaces or breaks the table but often leaves the files.

The deep scan finds photos, video, music, documents and archives by their content, so it can recover them without the table. But the names and folders were only ever in the table, so they can't come back.

What you'll see

  • Files marked “Deep scan, original name lost”, grouped under No original folder.
  • Names made up by the app, based on the file type, such as Recovered 00012.docx.

Finding the photos you want

  • Sort by date taken. Most cameras and phones store the date inside each photo, so it usually survives.
  • Filter by type, for example to show only video.
  • Use the preview. It is made from the recovered data, so it shows what you will get.

Files found by the quick scan keep their names and folders. That is only possible on FAT16, FAT32 and exFAT cards whose file table still lists them.
