How to recover deleted photos from a Canon camera card

Updated October 2026

Photos deleted on a Canon camera, or lost to a quick format, can usually be recovered from the card. CR3 and CR2 RAW files are found even after a format.

Canon cameras use FAT32 on cards up to 32 GB and exFAT on larger ones, and the card usually appears as EOS_DIGITAL. Both are read by the quick scan, with names and folders.

Newer Canon cameras record CR3 RAW files and older ones CR2. The deep scan recognises both by signature, so they can come back even after a format, without their names. CRW files from the earliest Canon digital cameras need the card's file table.

Recover them in four steps

  1. Stop using the card or driveDon't take more photos, copy files to it or format it. Every new file can overwrite one you want back.
  2. Connect it to your computer and open Data Recovery ProUse a card slot or a USB reader. If your computer offers to format or initialise the card, click Cancel or Ignore. Data Recovery Pro asks for permission so it can read the card directly.
  3. Scan and previewThe quick scan takes seconds; the deep scan reads every block. Files appear as they are found, each marked intact, partly damaged or not checked, so you see what can be recovered before you decide.
  4. Recover to your computerChoose the files you want and save them to a folder on your computer or another drive, never back to the card. You only pay if you choose to recover more than the free allowance.
